Geranium 'Frances Grate'

'Frances Grate'
Geranium 'Blue Sunrise' To start off, we are not talking about the plant commonly known as Geranium. That is actually Pelargonium x hortorum or garden Geranium. We are talking about the "true" Geranium, a winter hardy perennial and a diverse species.

Geranium are commonly known as Cranesbill
'Blue Sunrise'

True Geranium is on the deer resistant list, survives the winter to come back for you next spring and can bloom over a long period. Flower colors include blue, purple, magenta, pink and white. Many turn red in the fall as foliage dies back for winter. Some can be almost an invasive ground cover like Geranium macrorrhizum to almost shrub-like, although Geranium robustrum is not rated to this zone. Geranium 'Frances Grate' and 'Sugar Plum' are not either but Michelle gets them to come back on Cobb and so do I. The foliage alone is worth it on this beauty and it works well in hanging baskets and containers.

Genanium 'Cheryl's shadow' Although Geraniums prefer a little cooler climate than ours, given water and some afternoon shade, they can thrive for many years with little attention.
'Cheryl's Shadow'

We have several varieties in stock, in either 4-inch or 1 gallon sizes and I will be looking to get the great '2008 Perennial Plant of the Year' Geranium 'Rozanne' in gallon size. New to us this year is 'Cheryl's Shadow' with small dark chocolate-maroon leaves, available for short time in 4-inch size. Look for 'Blue Sunrise' with lime green foliage or 'Biokovo' if you want a good ground cover. All have nice foliage shape, some more delicate looking than others.

Geraniums
are a great addition to your garden.

Heart of Spring

We have now reached the date of the last average killing frost, so it is time to plant those vegetables and warm season annuals this month. Some things like basil, cucumber, melons and annual vinca could still struggle with the cool nights. Rick Barber of Barber County Farms in Kelseyville is once again providing beautiful local organically grown vegetable starts to the nursery. He can not do them all, so we fill in from others to have a wide selection of starts for the next couple of weeks.

Remember the aphids will be bad but only for a short period.  The wild plum trees in my front yard are covered with them!  The worst part is the sticky 'honeydew' substance they secrete that is all over my car.  The oaks at one of my accounts must be full of them too because I can see tiny shiny drops on the plants below.  I will be getting out the pistol sprayer on my water hose to hose off my wild plums and knock off as many as I can.  My car will get the same treatment.

Our water plants have arrived, along with the cactus we are trying out this year. There are still plenty of summer bulbs. The daylily bulbs are 25% while supplies last.

Upper Deck came - that is the iron basket order. Unfortunately, all our dragonfly hangers arrived broken and the popular set of 6 iron bugs did not come.

It was difficult to decide on the plant of the month but decided on true Geraniums.

I am keeping this short this month. I have so many irons in the fire and too little time.

Happy Gardening,
Tanya
